10 Best Tips for Cute & Intimate Couple’s Photos

Filed in: Engagement

If I’ve learned anything from being a photographer, it’s this: PDA photos are a hit or miss! We’ve all seen those pictures online of cute, aesthetic couples who absolutely nailed their photoshoot. Then we’re left wondering, “how on earth did they make it look so effortless and easy?”. The truth of the matter is this- some couples are naturally good at displaying intimate affection in front of the lens, and some aren’t. This is where this blog post comes in. Whether you’re a photographer or a couple about to get their photos done, this post is for you. I’m going over my 10 best tips for cute and intimate couple’s photos!

#1. Kisses Kisses Kisses

Yup. I said it. The couple has GOT to kiss! It may seem weird initially, but this is key to cute couples photos. I always like to tell my clients to hold them for a few extra seconds, always close their eyes, linger a few seconds before or after, and laugh or smile in each other’s faces- it works every time!

#2. Subtle movements are everything

It may not seem like it, but there is so much intimacy and personality brought into a photo by the brush of hair, a kiss on the shoulder, touching an arm, or playing with the hair at the bottom of his neck. Little moments are brought to life by just simple head movements and swaying! Try it out during your next couple’s photos- it’s a cheat code!

#3. When in doubt, laugh it out

Now, this one is easy. We all know that there is the funnier partner in every couple dynamic- this is their time to shine. Don’t get me wrong- don’t laugh through the entire shoot, but let me tell you, it’s a fantastic icebreaker. Laughing creates natural and authentic reactions from your fiancé and just brings a whole lot of JOY to your couple’s photos!

#4. Don’t forget to smile

This one may seem obvious but let me reiterate. Please don’t forget to smile! Especially during your couple’s photos. There is a method to making this work; rather than starting each pose with a big smile, begin with a smirk or a softer look and work your way into a bigger smile. And, if necessary, practice in the mirror before because, as they say- practice makes perfect!

#5. Dress for reality

Here are my two cents when figuring out what you want to wear for your couple’s photos. If you try it on at home and it’s too small, the strap won’t stay up, or the shoes hurt so badly they make you irritable…all those things will still be true when you show up for your shoot! It won’t magically change during your shoot. I think I’ve made my point clear enough.

#6. Personal space? Never heard of her

When it comes to couple’s photos, forget about personal space. I usually tell couples to smash their bodies together. No leaning in toward one another; just get in there! Leaving little to no space between bodies creates intimacy in an image without a makeout sesh!

#7. Embrace the catwalk

Fellas, you can walk normally, but ladies, this will be a game changer for ANY of your walking photos! Don’t overthink it, but let’s aim for one foot in front of the other. Think- runway model but make it couples photos style.

#8. Pockets should be empty

Guys, first of all, pockets should be empty at ALL times. Front, back, everything! Leave the wallet, keys, and any other item you may keep in those pockets open in case you have a hand feeling awkward or out of place. It’s the perfect subtle place, if you’re unsure, and create cute couple’s photos!

#9. Make them look GOOD

Gentleman, making your girl look good in your couple’s photos makes you look SO good! Focusing on your significant other is one of the easiest ways to avoid staring the camera down. This will ultimately make you look like the subtle hero that you are!

#10. Teamwork makes the dream work

If one of you is feeling nervous, a little camera shy, or having a hard time with the direction given to them in front of the camera..be a team!! Encourage each other! Help pull them out of that funk and get back to focusing on each other! I promise you, nagging and pointing out flaws has NEVER done a shoot any good!
